As you may have read from my previous blogs, working in the charity sector wasn’t always sunshine and roses, in fact, I got a rude awakening about how some charities are run like stuffy corporations with no souls.

However, there were a few gems I met along the way, Simon was one of them. He worked on the communities and fundraising. I always admired his wit, his curiosity, his love for community and his calmness.

We lost touch after I left the charity we worked for, but I’m happy to see he’s still in the charity sector, the UK charity sector, in particular, need more people like Simon. Who is graceful, confident and always full of ideas. But treat people with respect, no matter who they are or what title they have.

Simon’s dad was a lounge singer, who could sing any song you throw at him, sadly as he got older, he developed dementia and Simon had to relocate.

Simon would take his father on car rides and back then, the whole “car karaoke” was taking off, and Simon noticed the twinkle his father’s eye appeared once again and he knew he was on to something.

Teddy Mac became the Song a Minute man, I remember when this started to pick up media attention, I was so proud of Simon and happy for Ted. Ted’s voice gave those who have dementia and their caregivers' hope.

Mack the knife is my favourite, take a listen and watch the magic unfold.

Thank you Simon for everything you do for your community, the charity section and just being you. Today we celebrate you mate! I’m so glad we reconnected again.
