Rebranding and Redefining my social presence

At the beginning of the year, I went through a personal rebranding. After 20 years of exploring my various talents: writing, journalism, social media, PR, crisis management, LGBTQIA+ activism, radio and media production, I needed something to build my brand and tap into my talents.

I knew in 2021; I didn’t want to be labelled as a “social media manager” anymore; I knew like mentors I was surrounded with in my late teens and early 20s.

These “traditional marketing” professionals may have felt the same way I did as it was time to “pass the marketing torch” to the next generation.

That’s how I felt when it came time to write a strategy for TikTok; it just wasn’t me anymore. It’s time for this next generation to figure out how to cultivate authentic content to serve a purpose.

I know some quality content creators on TikTok; one of them is Milow (Rabble App), who uses the platform to raise people’s consciousness; that gives me hope that the next generation cares and does not use social for clout feeding their ego.

What’s next?

I believe in being very open and transparent with everything I do in life; However, I will be 39 in a few months; I’ve realized how much I’ve put on social media. My generation grew up on social media. So privacy is now the priority.

  • I don’t need to show off my meals
  • I don’t need to show off my good deeds
  • I don’t need to show off pictures of my wife and our adventures

But I still want to use social media and redefine a positive purpose.

Now I don’t post anything on my FB timeline instead I use the platform to engage with groups I like, pages I co-run and keep in touch with those I care about. And leave comments offering support, love and a bit of cheeky banter.

Can I tell you how good it feels not to feel obligated to tweet, post or capture something right then and there? I rather BE in the moment.

For those who want to reach out to me, they know to reach out to me. That’s all that matters.

I think I just had social media burnout from my years in social media. However, I still work closely with social media teams offering guidance, supporting strategies, and working with copywriters with my day job.

My blogs are divided to serve a purpose.

Medium: Medium focuses on reflections, memories from Desiclub days, radio days; I guess it’s the blueprint for my book.

I’ve been so busy perfecting comms, copy, community and social for other people and brands all these years; now it’s time to give my social media a little TLC.
